This training session is solely intended for first years' PhD Candidates 2015/16. It intends to enable the users’ to attain capacities in searching thus, becoming more knowledgeable about the resources available via Online Public Access Library Catalog, B-On and JSTOR restricted access databases.
Main objective:
To contribute to the enhancement of the users’ skills to effectively and efficiently recover information, using the SIBUC resources, in general, and the BNS resources, in particular.
An information literate user is able to:
Decide the extent of information he/she will need
Locate and access information efficiently
Evaluate information and its sources critically
Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base
Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally
Introduction to the Biblioteca Norte|Sul services: Lending and borrowing policies; Photocopies; Digitization; Holds;
- Introduction to the WebPAC, i.e.: Bibliographic Catalog: Bibliographic search
a) Simple Search - selecting one term:
i) Keyword; Author; Title; Subjects; Call Numbers; etc.;
b) Advanced Search - combining two or more terms:
i) Author/ Title; Author/Keyword; Subject/Keyword, etc.
- Accessing the databases and conducting the searches:
a) B-On (What is B-On; VPN access; Limited access);
b) JSTOR (What is JSTOR; Limited access)
- Recovering and managing information.
Guided Tour of BNS
- Introduction to the BNS spaces : a) Periodical publications; Reading room; 25th of April room; b) Collections (PPs; REF; Reports; Monographs;
- Identification of items on the shelves.
