Resumo

As the memory of empire recedes, I will reconsider the role of the postcolonial in the era of the twenty-first century and focus on three contemporary concerns, beginning with what I characterise as the politics of invisibility, and of unreadability, Finally I will investigate the degree to which in certain respects reviewing empires from the perspective of what might be termed the deep postcolonial present can highlight certain positive features in the organisation of empire.

Robert Young é Professor de Literatura Comparada na Universidade de Nova Iorque e Distinguished Visiting Scholar, no Centre for Postcolonial Writing da Universidade Monash, em Melbourne, Australia. É fundador, e actualmente Editor Geral, da revista Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies, publicada pela editora Routledge. O seu trabalho de investigação e docência tem focado as literaturas e culturas pós-coloniais, a história do colonialismo e anti-colonialismo, e outras questões abordadas pela teoria da literatura.
