University of  Sergipe distinguishes Boaventura de Sousa Santos

Boaventura de Sousa Santos,Director of the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, received on September 17, 2014, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), the highest award granted by this Brazilian educational institution.

According to the Statutes of the UFS, the honorary doctorate is awarded to distinguished personalities, "be for their  knowledge, for their efforts towards Philosophy, Science, Technology, Arts and Humanities, be it for promoting the better understanding between people or in defence of human rights”. The resolution that decided to award this title, approved in September 2013 by the University Council, «highlighted “the achievements of the honoured, the immense work published” in several languages, the fact that he is “one of the most influential social scientists of today in the field of Social Sciences, with extensive experience in the field”, besides having a trajectory closely linked to Brazil.»


Boaventura de Sousa Santos also delivered the opening conference of the Permanent UFS Forum, “For a Polyphonic University: between knowing and recognizing”, as well the release of “The rights of the oppressed”, a publication that is part of the doctoral thesis defended by Boaventura in 1973 at Yale University (USA). It is the first time that this research work is published in Portuguese.
