Abstract
The subject of the research is the processes of planning and construction of the Portuguese urban spaces built between the beginning of the Portuguese nationality (twelfth century) and the ends of the Old Political Regime (eighteenth century). It's about analyzing the Portuguese city and finds the characteristic mode of thinking, planning and building of the Portuguese School of Urban Planning.
Knowing that the urban planning production not always was codified, in the written or in the graphical way, and that the traditional methods and sources of Historical Sciences not always tell us about the practice of the plan and project, it became necessary to develop a new methodology for research, what happened in our Master's thesis, which we called Formal Analyses.
We will now study the form of the Portuguese City, combining it with the urban agents involved, the constructive and technological characteristics and the legislative fundaments, i.e., within the cultural, practical and theoretical aspects involved in the urban configuration and materialization.
