Abstract

As the memory of empire recedes, I will reconsider the role of the postcolonial in the twenty-first century and focus on three contemporary concerns, beginning with what I characterise as the politics of invisibility, and of unreadability, Finally, I will investigate the extent to which, in certain aspects, reviewing empires from the perspective of what might be called the deep postcolonial present can highlight certain positive features in the organisation of empire

Short Biography

Robert Young  is Professor of Comparative Literature at New York University and Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Postcolonial Writing at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He is the founder and currently General Editor of the journal Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies, published by Routledge. His research and teaching work has focused on postcolonial literature and cultures, the history of colonialism and anti-colonialism and other issues studied by the theory of literature.
