Overview

In collaboration with other projects at CES-UC, the Inter-Thematic Group on Migration (ITM) and FCT funded project (De)Othering organise the 2020 Migrating Rights | Keywords Series to mark the end of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the academic year 2019-2020. The 2020 Migrating Rights | Keywords Series complements and extends last year’s series of events launched under the title ‘Migrating Rights’ by ITM (2018-2019).

Following a set of keywords which are crucial for a critical understanding of the issues related to migrations and border regimes, the series includes 8 events  between roundtables and seminars, and an international workshop.

#1 Border
Based on this keyword, a roundtable is held on 11 December 2019 to discuss upon the work of Sandro Mezzadra. The event is chaired by Fátima Velez with interventions by Gaia Giuliani, Carla Panico, Irina Velicu.

#2 Interculturalism and Populism
A roundtable is held on 20 January 2020 to discuss the national collective frameworks which have been employed post-WWII to manage cultural differences. The event is chaired by Cristiano Gianolla with interventions by Luca Manucci, Manuela Guilherme, Amit Singh, Naky Ganglo and Maria Elena Indelicato.

#3 Middle Passages
A seminar is held on 19 February 2020 to critically examine the relations between postcolonialism, racism and the border. The keynote is delivered by Gaia Giuliani and commented by Manuela Ribeiro Sanches, Clara Keating and Júlia Garraio.

#4 Humanitarianism
A seminar is held on 30 March 2020 to dissect the complex constellation of technologies that humanitarian agencies currently employ to impede refugees’s reclamation of asylum rights. The keynote is delivered by Martina Tazzioli and commented by Cristina Santinho, Silvia Roque, and Joana Sousa Ribeiro (chair).

#5 Representations
This Roundtable is focused on debating historical public representations on migrants, refugees and racialised subjects in Portugal – paying particular attention to racialised, gender, age and religion-based tropes – as well as the myriad of effects of said representations. An anti-racist analysis of political, mediatic and academic discourses on non-white bodies will lead the debate between several activists and academics, aiming to unveil colonial legacies in contemporary times. This debate will count with the presence of Alexander Kpatue Kweh, Cyntia de Paula, José Baessa de Pina, Mamadou Ba and Ricardina Cuthbert, facilitated by Ana Rita Alves, Sílvia Leiria Viegas and Silvia Roque, on April 24, 2020, at Casa do Brazil.

#6 Violence
The purpose of this round table is to reflect on the concept of violence applied to different spaces perceived as being subjected to the border regime. We aim to discuss the border violence with scholars and activists who address the issue in their theoretical and political, intercultural and human practice. The round table will count with the presence of Francesca Esposito, Miguel Duarte, Mubarak Hussein and Sofia Lobo, facilitated by Carla Panico, Joana Sousa Ribeiro and Sílvia Leiria Viegas, on May 4, 2020, at CES-UC.

A roundtable of STS experts to dissecting the logistic and technological aspects of the border.

#8 Counter-narratives
International workshop on migrations and migrants held in herbst 2020.
