Considering the main goal of connecting research and action that encourage and promote full citizenship for all members of society, NHUMEP has been focusing on four main research areas:

Discourses, identities and representations. The main goals are: a) the comparative study of textual practices; b) the study of multimodal constructions of individual and collective identities; c) the critique of knowledge production, discourses, and representations from a feminist and a postcolonial theoretical framework.

Immigration and emigration: social and political dynamics. The main goal of this research line is to develop an analysis of the emigration and immigration phenomena within the Portuguese context, with past and present global dynamics. We are particularly interested in new migratory ways that challenge the existing orthodoxies within the migration studies and that demand an urgent reflection in today’s scenario.

History, memory, diaspora and postcolonialism(s). This research seeks to understand, not only concepts like memory and post-memory, but also secular historical processes that are behind the construction of individual and collective memories. The main theoretical framework of this work lies on the postcolonial studies.

Violence(s) and Peace; interventionism and global governance: this research line seeks to better understand the continuum between war and peace, attempting to map the multiple forms of violence, critically analyze global interventionism and decipher the emergent resistances and their contingent for political transformation.
