The presentation of Projects for the Monastery: Proposals under Debate, will de conducted by Rui Lobo and João Mendes Ribeiro and will include the participation of senior students from the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra, that will explain their projects for the instalation of a museological and interpretative centre at the old Santa Cruz Monastery and surrounding area. Common options are the recreation of a vertical element, of urban reference, at the site of the old Torre dos Sinos, demolished in 1935. Finally, invited architects Gonçalo Byrne (President of the Architects Bar) and Luís Miguel Correia (Director of DARQ-FCTUC) will critically comment the proposals, followed by an intervention by the Mayor of Coimbra, José Manuel Silva.
Speakers
Gonçalo Byrne is one of the most reknowned portuguese architects, with numerous works produced and published in Portugal and abroad. In Portugal, special mention to the APL Maritime Control Tower in Algés or the rehabilitation of the Alcobaça Monastery and surrounding urban space. In Coimbra, the rehabilitation of the Machado de Castro National Museum stands out. He has also received important distinctions and awards. He has been Visiting Professor at the Universities of Coimbra, Lausanne, Venice, Mendrisio, Leuven, Harvard and Pamplona. He is currently, and since June 2020, the new President of the Portuguese Architects Association.
José Manuel Silva holds a degree in Medicine from the University of Coimbra, 1983. PhD from the same University, since 1998, and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, having been Pro-Rector of the UC in 2003-2004. Is author and co-athor of several scientific works presented or published in conferences or national and international journals. Was President of the Centro Region Section of the President of the Portuguese Medical Association, between 2005 and 2010, and President of the Portuguese Medical Association between 2011 and 2016. Is currently, and since 2020, President of the Municipality of Coimbra. of the formou-se em Medicina pela Universidade de Coimbra em 1983. É Doutor pela mesma Universidade, desde 1998, e Professor da Faculdade de Medicina, tendo sido Pró-Reitor da UC em 2003-2004. É autor e co-autor de vários trabalhos científicos apresentados ou publicados em congressos ou revistas nacionais e internacionais. Foi Presidente da Secção Regional do Centro da Ordem dos Médicos, entre 2005 e 2010, e Bastonário da Ordem dos Médicos entre 2011 e 2016. É atualmente, e desde 2020, Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Coimbra.
Luís Miguel Correia é Professor Auxiliar no Departamento de Arquitetura da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra (DARQ-FCTUC), onde, desde 2021, exerce o cargo de Diretor. É investigador integrado do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares do Século XX (CEIS20). Licencia-se no DARQ-FCTUC e perfaz o Mestrado em Ciências da Construção pelo Departamento de Engenharia Civil da FCTUC. Obtém o grau de Doutor, na área de Teoria e História da Arquitetura, pela Universidade de Coimbra. É autor e coautor de diversos artigos e comunicações, com particular interesse de investigação concedido aos monumentos nacionais e à relação que tais construções do passado estabelecem com o território, a paisagem e certa ideia de identidade nacional. Desde 1993, dedica-se, em simultâneo, à prática da arquitetura.
João Mendes Ribeiro. Architect by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto in 1986. Holds a Doctorate in Architecture at the University of Coimbra in 2009. He is Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, where he teaches Project III. Distinguished with several awards such as FAD Award 2004 and 2016; Gold Medal for Best Stage Design, Prague Quadrennial, 2007; Enor Prize 2009; BIAU 2012 and 2016 Award; RIBA Award for International Excellence 2016 and BigMat Award 2017. He is a researcher of the «Santa Cruz Research Project», financed by FCT and FEDER/COMPETE2020/POCI.
Rui Lobo is a professor at the Architecture Department of FCTUC and a researcher at the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra. He holds PhD in Architecture, in 2010, at the University of Coimbra: A Universidade na Cidade. Urbanismo e Arquitectura universitários na Península Ibérica da Idade Média e da primeira Idade Moderna. He has produced research in the field of Theory and History of Architecture, particularly in the history of university architecture and urbanism and in the history of Portuguese architecture (16th to 18th centuries). He has taught course units of Architecture Theory and History, Design and Research Seminar. Between 2015 and 2018, he was Subdirector of the Department of Architecture of FCTUC. He is currently Principal Researcher of the Santa Cruz Research Project, financed by FCT and FEDER/COMPETE2020/POCI.
