October 30, 2021
Casa da Arquitectura (Matosinhos)
About
This initiative stems from the FCT-funded research project, «(EU)ROPA | Rise of Portuguese Architecture: Fundamentals, Platform, Progression», coordinated by Jorge Figueira and Bruno Gil, and based at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra.
Referring to the eleven "What?" in which the project is structured - Portuguese, History, Historiography, Fascism, Colonialism, Democracy, Social, Women, Education, Research, Pop - the conference will launch the debate on the ongoing research. In this format and with this wide latitude, “What? When? Why not? Portuguese Architecture” proposes to deepen the knowledge and to conquer a new critical dimension for the theme, at national and international level, an assessment open to new understandings and disruptions.
Together with the project coordinators Jorge Figueira and Bruno Gil, the core researchers Ana Vaz Milheiro, Carlos Machado e Moura, Carolina Coelho, Eliana Sousa Santos, Gonçalo Canto Moniz, José António Bandeirinha, Luís Miguel Correia, Nuno Grande, Patrícia Santos Pedrosa, Rui Lobo, will present the ongoing research.
Hans Ibelings is the keynote speaker who will open the conference with a reflection on peripheral and central cultures in the context of European architecture, and Cristiane Muniz and Fernando Viégas are the keynote speakers who will close with a Brazil/Portugal dialogue.
The international colloquium is accompanied by an exhibition with the same name, which will be on show at the Casa da Arquitectura Gallery between 29 October and 24 April.
The parallel programme, to be announced, will take place between January and April 2022 and will allow to deepen the themes of the exhibition.
