Communication and Democracy: on Media Regulation in Brazil

Overview
This seminar aims to present an overview of the main issues of the public and democratic field of social communication in Brazil, highlighting the following aspects: the struggle for the Brazilian Regulatory Framework for Communication, Confecom (National Communication Conference), the Public Field and Social Movements Network, the dismantling of Public TV, Electromagnetic Spectrum Concessions, Commercial Media and Telenovelas, as well as presenting a comparative perspective of Media Regulation in Brazil with other countries. The lecture will be followed by a video produced by the students of the discipline PUBLIC TV (IACS/UFF). Afterwards, a Q&A will be proposed.
Bio note
Heloisa Machado is Associate Professor IV of the Film and Video Department of the Institute of Art and Social Communication/IACS of the Fluminense Federal University. PhD in Paris III and UFRJ, with a postdoctoral degree from the University of Lisbon. She works in the following areas: Audiovisual, Theatre, Teledrama, Video Art, Communication Policy. She coordinates the Laboratory for the Democratisation of Communication and the Research Project: A TV Pública/Digital e a Produção de Conteúdos Ficcionais como Fator de Transformação Sócio-Cultural [Public/Digital TV and Production of Fictive Content as a Factor of Sociocultural Transformation.
