Abstract

In recent years, with the advancement of neoliberal policies, the issue of socioeconomic residential segregation gained space in the academic world and the public agendas of Latin American countries. Despite this increased visibility, the research focused on the study of urban spatial differentiation concentrated mostly in the metropolitan areas of Latin America and, for heuristic reasons, in the open period in the early 1990s. For this reason, the cities of Patagonia,  especially Neuquén, are an interesting platform from which to analyze those dimensions that can explain the population distribution within clusters of intermediate size. In this workshop we will try to observe, interpret and represent the evolution of socio-spatial inequalities in Neuquén during the period of 1980-1991. A systematic study of the subject would not only provide evidence of the historical process that led to the current fragmentation of the city, as well as collaborate to create the necessary inputs to perform comparative studies both between different cities in the region and between them and European cities.

Joaquín Perren  holds a a PhD in History from the Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was a doctoral and postdoctoral fellow of the Consejo Nacional Investigaciones Científicas y Technology, where he currently works as a  Assistant Researcher. He is a member of the Executive Unit of the Centre for Studies on Regional History (CEHiR) Network "Regional Socio-Historical Researches" (ISHIR-CONICET). Teaches ath the Faculties of Economics and Business Administration and Humanities of the Universidad Nacional del Comahue. He is author of "Las migraciones internas en la Argentina moderna. Una mirada desde la Patagonia. Neuquén: 1960-1991" (2012) and co-author of “Un conflicto social en el Neuquén de la confianza” (2007) e de “Silencio Hospital. Una historia de la salud pública en Neuquén” (2009). He has published articles in academic journals and chapters in collective volumes, in Argentina and other countries.
