Colloquium

Culture and the Revolution: memories, narratives, and contemporary questionings

November 16, 2024, 11h00

Casa da Achada (Lisbon)

This colloquium aims to promote a collective, open and plural debate on the role culture played in the politicising process of the Portuguese Revolution of 1974/75, reflecting on the multiple dimensions and challenges of that period and, concurrently, addressing a set of cultural practices and objects which, in the post-revolutionary period, reflected on the legacies of the revolution, exploring different interpretations, as well as a set of narratives and dissent that emerged in the cultural field around the memory and the historical and political significance of that period. Finally, this meeting proposes a roundtable discussion on how contemporary culture relates today to the very idea of revolution, whether thought of in the singular or plural, and how different experiences, stories, objects, and cultural and artistic practices reflect and intervene in the cultural, social, historical and political challenges of the present.
