Monoculture of Affections? LGBTI+ Popular Struggles for the Right to Land and Food Sovereignty

Coletivo LGBTI+ Sem Terra

December 4, 2024, 15h00 (GMT+1)

Online event

In this session, Sharp Talks welcomes the Landless LGBTI+ Collective - Coletivo LGBTI+ Sem Terra, an integral part of the Landless Rural Workers' Movement Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), the largest popular movement in Latin America. The Collective was born as a response to the multiple oppressions faced by LGBTI+ people in the countryside, claiming the right to sexual and gender diversity within the struggle for popular agrarian reform. The collective works to increase the visibility and acceptance of diversity, connecting gender and sexuality agendas to the struggle for land, territory and social justice.

The countryside is not only a place of production but also a place where life and freedom are produced, where diverse territorial bodies engage in the struggle against the multiple forms of violence that are the basis of colonial capitalist heterocispatriarchal racism. Its actions seek not only to confront LGBTI+phobia but also to build new imaginaries of what it means to belong and struggle in the context of the countryside.

In this sense, the collective reaffirms that recognising the right to exist and fighting against the structures that make LGBTI+ people vulnerable is, and always will be, an agenda for workers organised in the popular struggle for agrarian reform.
For 40 years, the Landless Rural Workers' Movement Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) has been organising rural workers and society to achieve land reform in Brazil. Today, around 450,000 families have conquered the land through the struggle of the MST.

This Sharp Talk is organised in partnership with the CES Study Group on Solidarity Economy (ECOSOL-CES) and the BioTraCes project (Horizonte Europa - grant agreement N° 101081923).
